Rowan: I asked Jake about Christmas dinner, Effs, and he’d love to come. He’s going to drop by and say thanks in person.
Effie: Oh that’s good, Rowan! I thought he’d probably already have other plans, but that’s lovely that he can come.
Rowan: He’s so pleased you asked him, he hasn’t got any family. He was telling me yesterday, he lost his parents last year… I don’t think he’s really talked to anyone about it before. Well, not anyone close, I mean, like a friend.
Effie: But he felt he could talk to you about it, Rowan. It just shows you, doesn’t it – you never know what’s going on in other people’s lives. He just always seems so laidback and carefree, but people put on a front. Well, I’m very pleased I asked then.
Rowan: Me too – it makes me feel really awful, though, that I was so horrible to him! He could have any girl he wanted, couldn’t he? But he wanted to be with me. I don’t know why he kept bothering with me. I’d have told me to sod off.
Effie: Well, he obviously saw something that made him want to keep trying. Maybe one day you can explain to him why you were so spiky, if you want to clear your conscience – but in the meantime, I wouldn’t dwell on it. Things are going well between you now, aren’t they?
Rowan: He’s so happy about little things, like holding hands. And when we arrange when we’re seeing each other again – I think he half expects me to turn him down, and he’s so pleased when I don’t…you can just see it all in his face.
Effie: Then you’d better make sure you give him plenty of things to feel happy about, hadn’t you? Including a good Christmas – it seems like the last one probably wasn’t too great for him, so we’ll try to make up for it this year.
Rowan: It’s going to be great…do you want me to make some sausage rolls? I can do them early and you can put them in the freezer ready, if you like.
Effie: Oh yes, please, you’re better at pastry than me – it’s those cold hands! You know what they say; cold hands, warm heart…
Rowan: Cold hands, hot head, Mum always says…
Effie: Yes, but only when she’s talking about you, Rowan.
