Rowan: Oh sod it – oh shit – oh – bloody hell!
Effie: Rowan! I don’t want the girls woken up from their nap by you swearing!
Will: Blimey, we seem to have walked into a knitting circle. Didn’t even know you could knit, Rowan.
Rowan: Well, obviously I bloody well can’t!
Louise: We just thought it would be relaxing for Rowan if we all did some knitting together for the baby, but I’m not sure it was such a good idea after all.
Rowan: Isn’t it hard enough that I have to give birth to him, without knitting him stuff as well…?
Jake: It would be nice, though, wouldn’t it, to make something for him? Let’s see…what are you making?
Rowan: I’m making a mess. That’s not a lace pattern, that’s just dropped stitches.
Jake: You’re probably being impatient and trying to rush it, aren’t you? Just take your time!
Rowan: We made a quilt when Effie was pregnant. That was easier. Well – I didn’t do the sewing. But I cut out the paper bits and the fabric, so I still helped, didn’t I?
Effie: Of course you did, it was a big part of making the quilt!
Will: It’s still not finished though.
Effie: It was a big project – hand sewing takes a long time!
Rowan: Yeah but this time we could borrow Sadie’s sewing machine; we could do a quilt like the ones Jane makes.
Louise: It’s not an easy option, love! You have to measure and cut and sew everything accurately, and sitting at a sewing machine can be very tiring, it won’t do your back any good.
Rowan: Well – maybe I could cut the bits out and you could machine it…
Jake: Ro, how about if you knit some practise squares and sew them into a blanket? That would be nice; we could use it in the pushchair or whatever.
Rowan: But I want to knit him something nice…I’m just really crap at all this domestic stuff!
Jake: Ro, don’t get stressed over it…
Louise: Jake’s right, love, it’s not worth getting wound up over knitting a cardigan.
Will: Five minutes ago, you said you didn’t see why you had to knit him anything!
Effie: Rowan, MY knitting isn’t very good either. I can’t even decide whether I prefer doing it left or right handed! We just need some practise, that’s all. It doesn’t matter if we only end up making a little hat, does it? It’s just nice to have something we can all do together, Sadie will want to join in too when she gets home.
Rowan: Sadie’s good at knitting…well, I am going to knit him something. I’ve got sixteen weeks to do it, haven’t I? Maybe a bit less…
Jake: That’s plenty of time, isn’t it? You could just do a little bit every day.
Rowan: It doesn’t matter, does it, if it turns out holey or a funny shape – he can wear it in the house and it will still be warm, the important thing will be that I made it for him.
