Tom has been renting Daniel’s spare room for a couple of weeks now and they are getting on really well. So well, in fact, that Daniel has offered Tom the use of his old bike when Dan is away working. He just got it out of storage and they are going round to the garage to take a look. Tom has graciously accepted but, although he doesn’t say it to Dan, he’s not quite sure why Dan thinks he would want a loan of his bike – Tom’s a postie, he does enough cycling at work!
Oh right – THAT sort of bike! Well that makes all the difference. Tom had mentioned to Dan that his ancient motorbike has given up the ghost six months ago, and he was saving for another one. He has really missed his bike, so Dan hopes this loan will help.
Tom can’t believe his luck. The bike is very dusty and needs some attention, but it’s basically sound. Tom will enjoy working on it.
Niamh has come to see what’s going on, and she’s thrilled too. This gesture just helps to confirm what she has always thought – Daniel is the best big brother in the world.
Tom can’t thank Daniel enough – the bike obviously means a lot to Dan and Tom feels honoured that Dan trusts him with it.
Daniel feels he can trust Tom to be careful if he takes Niamh out on the bike too. Tom may act younger than his years in a lot of ways, but he’s very mature about important things like road safety.
Effie and Will have dropped by for a look. Effie is pleased for Niamh and Tom, she knows they will have a lot of fun on the bike. But she can’t help feeling a little envious of her sister. When she was about Niamh’s age, Will had a motorbike, and she used to wish with all her heart that she could be his passenger, and sit behind him with her arms wrapped tightly round him.
Well – why not try it now? Better late than never!
Effie doesn’t particularly want to go anywhere on the bike now – she just wanted to know what it felt like!
