Jake: I reckon you’ve gone soft in your old age!
Rowan: I bloody have not! What do you mean?
Jake: Asking Robin to stay for dinner!
Rowan: Well…you were only going to the chippy anyway, it wasn’t like it was any trouble. Anyway you’re soft, bringing him back in the first place.
Jake: He looked like he could use a cup of tea. You didn’t mind, did you?
Rowan: Course not. He seems like a nice kid.
Jake: Tom likes him.
Rowan: And you think that’s good as a character reference?
Jake: He’s more reliable than you – when we first met, you thought I was an annoying weirdo!
Rowan: Who says I’ve changed my opinion?
Rowan: You know, it got me thinking while you were running Robin home – can you imagine if Jack wanted that badly to get away from us that he’d move to the other end of the country?
Jake: Well… I can’t imagine how Robin’s mum must feel…
Rowan: Oh well I wasn’t looking at it from her point of view!
Rowan: I mean, he must have felt really desperate to get away from her – she sounds like one of those really pushy mums that want to live their dreams through their kid.
Jake: There’s two sides to every story, though. It might just be a big pile of teenage angst – you know what it can be like when you’re that age, sometimes you feel like the whole world’s against you.
Rowan: I’m surprised you remember that far back!
Jake: I’m not surprised you do – you haven’t grown out of it yet.
Rowan: You cheeky sod!
Jake: Anyway – Jack’s going to have a much different family life to Robin, he’s got two parents who’ll love him and be proud of him whatever he does, and who’ll always be there for him, so why would he ever want to run away from home?
Rowan: And he’s got all the rest of the family – he’s got grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins and friends –
Rowan: And in a couple of years, he’ll probably have a brother or sister too…
Jake: Really?
Rowan: Yeah, I reckon I could do it all again…
