Will: Sure you’re happy with that?
Effie: Yes, that’s perfect! There’s still a nice wide border so we can have lots of plants round.
Will: Well, I’ll get the stuff ordered then! It’ll be nice to get it done before winter.
Effie: Yes, it will. Will – Rowan went to the pub last night, she was going to be nice to Jake.
Will: I wish I’d known, I could have warned him! How did he take it?
Effie: Well, actually he wasn’t there. But would you have told him, if you’d known?
Will: No of course not – I’m just joking, sweetheart! I’m sure he’d be able to withstand the shock, anyway. I mean, he owns the pub – there’s always going to be a stiff drink to hand!
Effie: She really likes him, Will – and he likes her too, he told Jamie and she told Rowan.
Will: I think he’s a nice guy. Don’t you?
Effie: Yes, I like him a lot – but suppose we let him know Rowan likes him? Just to, you know, give things a push in the right direction? I could tell Jamie, and –
Will: Eff, I don’t know that we should interfere. They’ll get there, in their own time.
Effie: Do you think so? I mean, suppose Rowan hadn’t told me to tell you how I felt about you. Maybe we still wouldn’t be together. And I told Niamh Tom was too shy to ask her out, so she asked him – and they are so happy. Sometimes it seems like a helping hand wouldn’t hurt.
Will: I don’t know…I think Niamh would have asked Tom out without you saying anything, she knows how to get what she wants! And as for us – we would have got there. You know I was just waiting because it didn’t seem like the right time…
Effie: But it was the right time wasn’t it? Oh – I just want Rowan to be happy!
Will: You can’t be responsible for everyone’s happiness, sweetheart! If Rowan’s decided to be friendlier to Jake, that’s a good start, isn’t it?
Effie: Mmm…yes it is…well okay, I’ll leave them to it. I think you’re right. Oh – I can hear Daisy!
Will: Come on then; let’s go in, I’ll make you a cup of tea and a bacon sarnie.
Effie: Will – the other day, your mum said she thought Daisy was just like Rowan when she was a baby. And then she laughed and said ‘God help you’!
