Rowan: Oi, Thorne! Get your arse in here a minute!
Jake: Ro – what are you doing on the floor?
Rowan: I was trying to get something from under the bed, but there’s some other big thing under there and I can’t get it out to get MY thing.
Jake: Well, maybe you weren’t SUPPOSED to get it out, because it was supposed to be a surprise. Shift your feet.
Rowan: It’s a daft place to hide a surprise, it’s the first place anyone is going to look. Bear that in mind at Christmas. So, what is it then?
Jake: It’s something I made for you, I don’t know if you’ll like it…
Rowan: Um – the colours are pretty – is it a bit of abstract art or something…?
Jake: Well – you know when people give you cards and they’ve got butterflies on, or gift wrap, and you always say you’re going to keep them? And then what do you actually do with them?
Rowan: I stick them in a drawer and they get all squashed and tatty and I get cross about it.
Jake: I thought maybe we could cut the butterflies out and stick them on here – like a collage. And we could put photos and things on here too –
Rowan: Like a scrapbook, but hung on the wall?
Rowan: Oh wow…we could put the scan pictures on here, and some photos from the wedding, and then when the baby’s here, we could get his hand and foot prints… and then there will be our family photos!
Jake: Yes – our little family…
Rowan: Oh, I love it, Jake! Thank you! I’m going to start cutting things out for it right away.
Jake: Anyway, what was it you wanted from under the bed? I’ll get it for you.
Rowan: It’s something I made! It’s in that brown box –
Jake: Oh yes – the box you stuffed your knitting into and vowed never to open again…don’t tell me you knitted something!
Rowan: Well, open it and see!
Jake: Oh – you did! You knitted a jumper!
Rowan: You don’t have to sound THAT surprised…
Jake: All that swearing and throwing it across the room, and throwing it in the bin and getting it out – it’s brilliant, Ro. It’s brilliant!
Rowan: It’s not that neat, and it came out a bit big, but he’ll grow into it. And I did it in Villa’s colours for you! Probably won’t look that great if he turns out to be a girl…
Jake: It will look great whatever. I’m really impressed you finished it, Ro. And I love the colours.
Rowan: Well – I got bored knitting in pastels!
Jake: Of course, you’ve still got six weeks to knit another one…
Rowan: Steady on, sunshine, I’m not going into mass production.
