When there are serious issues to be discussed, Effie’s bed seems like a comfortable haven…
Rowan: Not sure why I’d think you’re the best person to come to for advice about men. When I think of all the times I tried to tell you what to do about Greg… and did you listen?
Effie: Well, to be honest, Rowan, cutting his balls off wasn’t really a helpful suggestion, was it? Anyway, you obviously want to talk about Jake. So what’s up?
Rowan: Oh…I don’t know…he just pisses me off!
Effie: Why?
Rowan: He just does.
Effie: That’s not good enough, Rowan. You can’t expect to talk it through with me if you’re not going to say anything sensible.
Rowan: Oh I’m not good at this stuff…
Effie: Oh for heaven’s sake! Look – you find him attractive, don’t you? So why are you keeping him at a distance?
Rowan: I don’t know! He’s just so – different – to the kind of bloke I usually go for. And maybe he doesn’t really fancy me anyway; maybe he flirts with everyone who goes in the pub!
Effie: I don’t think he does flirt with everyone. But if you really like him, you should do something about it. If you keep giving him the cold shoulder, he’s going to give up on you, and you’ll have missed your chance.
Rowan: I can’t help myself, Eff. I know I’m being stupid…he’s just got right under my skin. I don’t feel like I’m in control and it’s scary. So then I can’t help getting defensive.
Effie: Rowan – you don’t have to go rushing into anything. Just try loosening up a bit – let him know you like him, and see what happens. You don’t have to throw yourself at him, do you? Just let him know you might be interested and see how he responds. Then if he does want to take things further, don’t panic about it. Let him know you want to take things at your own pace. And if he doesn’t like that – well, then you can enjoy telling him to get lost.
Rowan: I’ll give it a couple of days; then I’ll go to the pub and try to be nice to him. How would that be?
Effie: That sounds fine – just do everything in your own time.
Rowan: Eff, I’m glad I talked to you about this. If I’d spoken to Sadie, she would have told me to just rip my clothes off and jump into bed with him! Oh I forgot – that’s what you did with Will, isn’t it?
