Rowan: I think it would do him a lot of good to have his own dog.
Jake: But he’s got Sooty…
Rowan: Not Jack, you knob – Robin!
Jake: Oh! Well – maybe…
Rowan: Definitely – and you were trying to put him off. Why’d you do that?
Jake: I was not! I was just trying to be realistic about it. You were practically trying to persuade him into it, you’d all but marched him down to the RSPCA!
Rowan: I think it would give him something to focus on – something to be responsible for. When you have a dog, you get yourself a routine, don’t you? Dogs like routine. He just sort of drifts along, doesn’t he?
Jake: I think he focuses on Lizzie…
Rowan: You know what I mean.
Jake: Well, yeah but do you think he could manage a dog? He’s a bit – well – scatty. He seems to have enough trouble just looking after himself.
Rowan: Oh, honestly! Give him some credit. He’s doing all right now.
Rowan: Besides, if you have someone else to be responsible for, you try harder anyway, don’t you, than if you’re just looking out for yourself?
Jake: Well – yes. I suppose that’s true. But he would really need to think about a lot of things. It’s like I said about if he was away from home; I mean, in his line of work –
Rowan: But he’s not working!
Jake: He isn’t right now, but he’s bound to get back to it, isn’t he? He just needed a bit of a break.
Rowan : Well, I don’t think –
Jake: Ro – let’s drop it. I don’t even know why we’re discussing it – it’s up to him if he gets a dog. It’s been really busy this evening and I’m tired.
Rowan: Okay, but don’t you dare fall asleep on me – I’ve got plans for you…
