Will: Sorry I’m a bit late – it’s been hectic today! How have you been?
Effie: Much better today! I’m doing a roast dinner – chicken, is that okay?
Will: Eff, you don’t have to cook every night!
Effie: But I like to!
Will: Actually it’s quite handy that you’re cooking a chicken – because I kind of invited someone for dinner…
Effie: Oh Will – who is it? I don’t think I did enough vegetables…what’s that noise? It sounded like a dog, but it came from the kitchen!
Will: This is our dinner guest! We found him tied up out the back of the surgery this morning – I guess he’s just been abandoned.
Effie: What? But it was pouring with rain this morning! Oh poor little thing…are we keeping him?
Will: Well, no, I just brought him home tonight because there’s no room for him to stay at the surgery. Is that okay? He seems pretty well behaved. We did try and find out where he came from, but no luck, so we’ll take him to one of the animal shelters tomorrow.
Effie: But we could keep him!
Will: Eff – I’d love a dog, but it’s not really a good time to take one on, is it? We’ve got a baby on the way.
Effie: But he’s lost his home – and he’s here tonight, and then it will be somewhere new tomorrow, and who knows how long it will take him to find a new home – and he won’t know whether he’s coming or going – oh I can’t bear it…
Will: Oh Effie, sweetheart, please don’t cry! He’ll soon find a nice new home; small dogs are always easier to rehome.
Effie: I want to keep him – oh please, Will! Please!
Will: Look – I know I should say no – you’re too emotional about everything right now to think it through. But – we’ll see how it goes, okay? A trial run.
Effie: Oh thank you, Will – you won’t regret it, I promise!
Will: Come on now, stop crying, he’s getting worried about you! There’s just one thing – you’re not calling him Hamish. You don’t know how many Westies I meet who are called Hamish!
Effie: Well – I’ll call him Haggis.
Will: Er – yeah – good idea…
