Effie: That was your mum on the phone – Rowan’s had a boy, half an hour ago, 7lbs 8oz!
Will: Oh that’s fantastic – how is she?
Effie: She’s fine! Well, very tired, obviously.
Will: Does she want us to go in and see her?
Effie: No, she’s coming home later today. I knew she wouldn’t want to stay in!
Will: I bet Sadie will be miffed that the baby’s arrived when Dan’s whisked her off for that surprise holiday!
Effie: It’s probably just as well – she’d be straight round there, wanting to know every detail, and I don’t think Rowan would be happy about that.
Will: There we go, Daisy. I don’t think Rowan will want ANYONE rushing straight round to visit, do you?
Effie: No, I don’t think she will. She’ll want some time in her own little world, with just Jake and the baby.
Will: Do you remember, you wanted to show the twins off to everyone the minute they were born? I had to persuade you to get some rest!
Effie: Oh yes! Well, you were right. Rowan’s very different to me though. I’m glad they’ve got a boy.
Will: Me too. I don’t think Jake had a preference, but Rowan had this daft idea that we gave Mum and Dad their first grandchildren, so it would be nice if she could give them their first grandson.
Effie: Well, it IS nice, but no-one would have been disappointed with another girl!
Will: Of course they wouldn’t! Anyway – we’ll just have to be patient till we can meet little Jack, won’t we? Shall we offer to look after Sooty for a few more days, give them one less thing to cope with?
Effie: Yes, that’s a good idea. The girls will like that too.
Will: Daisy, would you pass Daddy the shoe? Thanks – hey, this is the one that’s supposed to be on your foot!
Effie: Oh – I forgot to mention – when Tom babysat the other afternoon…
Effie: …he spent the whole time teaching them to take their shoes off.
Will: *sigh*…maybe Rowan and Jake would do a swap…they’d miss out on the sleepless nights and nappies, and we could start all over again, with a nice new baby that’s never been exposed to Tom…
